It is spring! We finally have warm weather and we are all in the yard and garden and anxious for blooms, flowers and fruit. Some of us are fortunate enough to live where after a colder than usual winter, are already enjoying some fabulous flowers. (By the way, we pay later in the summer when the heat forces our gardens into dormancy!)
The one question I answer daily is this: When should I start using my Spray-N-Grow and Bill’s Perfect Fertilizer? My answer is always the same—it depends where you live!
As soon as you see new green or new growth you can use Spray-N-Grow. Actually you can use Spray-N-Grow any time. However, I never use any fertilizer (with NPK) until they are out of danger of a frost. I hate to see our plants full of buds and blooms and then see a freeze kill them all.
Sometimes, of course, the plants bud and bloom without fertilizer really early and they are in danger. That is just part of gardening, but we want to do all we can to help, not hinder. In fact, using Spray-N-Grow on plants early helps strengthen them so they are better able to handle stress like a late frost. I also recommend applying Spray-N-Grow to all plants that are affected by a late frost. It helps them bounce back.
Once the warm weather is here to stay, we use Spray-N-Grow and Bill’s Perfect Fertilizer regularly. In our case, that is once a week. We live on a peninsula that has very poor soil (sand) and our plants crave nutrition. Of course, even plants that live in good soil love Spray-N-Grow! Some of you may not need the entire Perfect Kit that often, but you can use the products together or separately. So, even if your plants don’t need Bill’s every week, you can still give them a shot of Spray-N-Grow just to keep them happy. Because happy plants are the best plants!
