Violets are starting to take over a corner of my lawn. The thick grass makes digging them up a challenge. Is there a better solution?

Thanks, Wilt. This is helpful. My new dahlias are now starting to flower, although some of the plants seem a bit stunted. Unfortunately, my house is three miles from the Capitol, political hot air tends to dissipate before it reaches my serene back…

I am just a tad North and East of DC and have had good success with dahlias over the years. Digging the tubers before really cold temps hit does seem to be necessry in our area as they are only hardy in zones 7-11, but I have gotten by when some wer…

I love my two Gold Mop shrubs, but they've outgrown their location. Can they be pruned to fit the space and still retain their charming "mussed hair" look? djb

Does anyone have advice about growing dahlias in Washington, DC? I'll be trying them for the first time this year.

DJB. Dahlias are so easy to grow. Don't plant them too deeply and after you plant them, water the soil thoroughly. Don't overwater as too much water will rot the tubers. I usually water once after planting and then when I see some growth I begin to water. Slugs love the newly emerging buds so watch for them. Dahlias are pretty much pest free. Last year I had a Japanese Beetle problem but I won the battle. Dinnerplate dahlias are my favorite flower followed closely by oriental lilies. I'm in NYS do I have to lift and store my tubers in the fall but it's not and enormous job and I store them in the basement. Right now I'm in South Carolina and when I get home I'll check the tubers and I'll bet they've started to sprout. BTW, I'm the sng cover girl winner for January--that's my dahlia on the catalog cover. Best wishes. Joan
