beautiful bad bug

I found this beautiful ½ inch long bug on my apple tree.  I have never seen one of these in a long time, but I didn't want to find out if it is going to lay eggs on my apple tree.  It is dead now. 

Can anyone tell me if it is a good guy or bad guy?  I have always thought it is a bad bug.  I guess when you have lots of good food in a yard then the bugs come to dine!
